Hi everyone, I am Karen, I am a primary teacher/SENCO by training and a L7 dyslexia assessor. I am currently Learning Support Services Manager at West Berkshire Council and oversee the cognition and learning team who carry out our maths/dyscalculia assessments in schools. I want to be able to support them and also be able to assess for dyscalculia myself. Looking forward to getting stuck into the course.

Hi everyone. I am Ali and am finally getting round to getting stuck into the course after a busy few months! I am an independent dyslexia assessor and tutor and I am looking forward to learning more about dyscalculia so I am able to help students with maths difficulties too. I would also like to conduct diagnostic assessments for dyscalculia in the future. Previously I have worked as a primary school teacher and also a teaching assistant. I am really enjoying the course so far and have learnt a lot already - thank you.

Hi, my name is Jane and I am the curriculum lead for maths and ICT at a specialist college with campuses in Cornwall & Devon. Many of my students are autistic, all have learning difficulties. Almost all of my students have maths anxiety when they first come to college. I'm hoping to be able to gain some new strategies for supporting my students and to give me a better insight into whether the problems are something more than anxiety.

Hello All! My name is Emma and I am a specialist literacy teacher working in three primary schools in Brighton. I was a primary class teacher for more than 25 years, working from Nursery all the way up to Y5, teaching maths on a daily basis. I started my MA in SpLD (dyslexia) in 2017 and was lucky enough to get work as a specialist literacy teacher soon after this. I now have AMBDA and current APC. Many of the pupils I work with have maths difficulties as well as literacy difficulties, and I am keen report to report more knowledgeably, make the right recommendations, and provivde support and training for staff. I am particularly interested in understanding how maths anxiety impacts on learners and the difference between difficulties caused by a SpLd and dyscalculia itself. Looking forward to getting started!

Hi All, My name is Julie. I am a secondary school maths teacher living on the Surrey Hampshire boarder. I am a former accountant who retrained as a teacher back in 2007. After six or seven years in state school I have moved to a dyslexic school for boys. Two years ago I completed a level 5 course in understanding how to teach neuro diverse students but have always wanted to raise the understanding of dyscalculia to the same level of understanding as dyslexia having written my pgce dissertation in dyscalculia several years ago. I am hoping that this course will help me to do that.

Hi. I am in awe of everyone's qualifications on here and slightly intimidated. I am an Army wife with a dyslexic daughter and due to that I did my Level 5 Diploma with Helen Arkell this last year in order to reach out to other struggling learners who may have been overlooked at school. I am not a teacher but believe that the right person with the right tools, attitude, compassion and approach can make an enormous difference. We move every 2-3 years and will once again be heading for foreign shores next summer which isn't particularly helpful but in the meantime I want to make the most of being here and broaden my own knowledge. Not being a qualified teacher I feel I want to/need to get another string to my bow. Maths is certainly not my strong point, rather than anxiety I think I glaze over when numbers are mentioned - should be an interesting course and an incredibly steep learning curve! My aim is to demystify letters and numbers, enlighten those that don't get them and seriously boost their self-belief and esteem. I am coming to the course with no prior knowledge or experience but I'm looking forward to the next challenge.

Hi My name is Michelle Prunty, I am based in Belfast in Northern Ireland. I have been a primary school teacher for the last 20 years. I have been out of class working with small groups and individuals as part of our response to lockdown learning loss , with particular focus on numeracy. I wanted to learn more about and understand pupil difficulties, in order to facilitate their understanding and learning further. I am looking forward to working with you all.

My name is Alison and I did my AMBDA qualification when I found out one of my children was very dyslexic. Since then I have become a self employed literacy/dyslexia tutor and work in various settings helping primary children (including the governments catch up programme). I feel now is the time to learn more about maths and how to better help some of the children I meet.

Hi I have just joined this course and am looking forward to learning more and connecting with the others who have just started. I am a primary school teacher, mainly in the independent sector and am currently working in a mixture of salaried and self employed roles with individual children with dyslexia. I recently completed my Level 7 dyslexia assessore course but am keen to learn more about dyscalculia and how to best help the children I work with.

Hi everyone, I’m Fiona and I live in Surrey. I became interested in dyslexia when my son started showing difficulties, so I completed my Level 3 Supporting Learners with SpLD at the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre in 2014. I then started working at an independent school in Surrey, initially doing in class support and then helping the children in Form 1 with phonics and learning to read. Over the years I have gradually increased my remit and now work with children in Forms 1-6 helping them with both literacy and maths however I increasingly find myself supporting more children with maths difficulties. I’m keen to improve the support that I offer, to improve my understanding of dyscalculia and maths anxiety, and to develop practical strategies that will help the children I work with.

Hi everyone, I work as a tutor at the Northern Ireland Dyslexia Centre having obtained OCR level 5. We are getting more requests to help pupils who have dyscalculia, or undiagnosed problems with maths, and I thought this course was a great opportunity to learn how I can best help them. I have already enjoyed using many of Steve Chinn's resources and look forward to learning more. My past experience has been in a mainstream primary school, particularly supporting pupils who have autism as a special needs classroom assistant. Sheena

I work for Brighton and Hove Inclusion Support Service as a specialist teacher for literacy difficulties and dyslexia but am also very interested in dyscalculia, maths difficulties and all the overlaps. And I began my teaching career in the same school as Sammi (above). A few years ago... Hi Sammi!

Hello everyone, wishing you all a happy new year! I'm Helen and I teach Primary 6 and am involved in Learning Support in my primary school in Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. I also teach some pupils with dyslexia on a one to one basis through the NI Dyslexia Centre. Whilst I have tools on board for supporting children with literacy difficulties, I am interested to learn more about dyscalculia, understanding the similarities and differences to dyslexia and gaining some skills on how to help children with dyscalculia. Looking forward to starting the course this January.

Hi and Happy New Year to everyone! I'm really looking forward to starting the course, further developing my knowledge and getting to know you all. It's sometimes hard working on your own so it will be exciting to share ideas, ask for advice and get suggestions on different approaches. I am a private tutor teaching both literacy and numeracy and work mainly with primary school aged kids. I don't have a background in teaching but became interested when we had our daughter assessed and qualified 10 years ago. I love teaching maths but feel a refresher course would be very beneficial. Looking forward to getting to know everyone! kati
