Hi everyone, I'm Sue and I live in Berkshire. I am a trained Primary teacher but work in a secondary school doing some English, but mostly maths interventions. Three years ago I completed my OCR Level 5 Diploma in SpLD. As a result of this I also work for a Dyslexia charity on a Saturday, working 1:1 with children who are struggling in school because of their maths and literacy difficulties. I also do some private tuition. Since so much of my work is now supporting students in maths, I felt I needed more understanding of the maths difficulties that so many of my children struggle with. I am looking forward to this course and learning lots more about Dyscalculia and hope to develop practical strategies to really help my students. Hi Sue Good to 'meet' you Really great to have you on the course, it sounds as though you are super busy already. Let me know if you need anything or if you have any questions Judy

Hi, I'm Matt Walker. I have taught in primary for around 10 years and worked in Educational Sales as well as working for a charity supporting disadvantaged learners. I now provide 1 to 1 support for children who have been excluded from school as well as providing private tuition in Maths.

Hi I'm Caroline and I'm joining the cohort starting in September. I'm a self-employed dyslexia tutor and assessor, although I also work in a local primary school as a teaching assistant 2 days per week. I haven't been working in school since March, as I was shielding my Mum, so have done quite a lot of teaching online, and providing support via email, Google Drive, FaceTime, Skype and Zoom!
I am really looking forward to doing this course, as I have often ended up being asked to provide maths support! Personally I managed ok with maths at school until I suddenly dived into maths anxiety during my A-levels, bombing from an A in my mock to a D in the actual exam. I still find mental maths quite tricky, and add any time pressure and my mind goes blank. This has made me very sympathetic to pupils who find maths inexplicably hard!

Hi Caroline Great to have you on the course and thanks for introducing yourself. My son had exactly the same experience with his A'levels going from an A* for GCSE to a U in his AS level Maths. Though I think I took on most of the anxiety over that !! Judy

Hello. My name is Natalie Kerslake. I’m a Teaching Assistant currently working in KS2.
I have a particular interest in supporting children with dyscalculia and maths difficulties. I did my MA Ed dissertation research looked at how teachers and teaching assistants can effectively support children with dyscalculia in one primary school. My study found that more awareness and training need to be provided for teachers and teaching assistants, to aid them in supporting children with dyscalculia. This includes knowledge of what dyscalculia is and what strategies can be used to support children effectively.
I’m very much looking forward to doing this course and enhancing my knowledge and skills around dyscalculia and maths difficulties.

Hi. I’m Catherine, currently living in London. I am a former primary and middle school teacher and have worked both in the UK and abroad in Venezuela. Currently, I am an online tutor, having gone self-employed around 4 years ago. Although I teach Maths and English, more and more of my tuition is becoming Maths based and a lot of the children I tutor have either Maths anxiety or really struggle. I have been aware of Dyscalculia for quite a while and have been reading around and trying out different activities with my tutee’s from a variety of books and teach mainly through manipulatives and games.
I am really enjoying the course so far and have already learnt so much about Maths anxiety (that’s how far I have got) and it’s already made me think about how I can help some of my anxious tutees using the suggested strategies.

Hi everyone,
I am a SENCO in a mainstream junior school in Gravesend, Kent and I am just completing the level 7 dyslexia assessor course through Canterbury Christchurch. Now I am really looking forward to focusing on dyscalculia when I start this course in October, especially as I looked at teachers understanding of this as part of my msc psychology dissertation a few years back.

Hi everyone. I am Karen Simpson and I qualified as a primary school teacher in 2004. I have taught in a number of different schools and left class teaching in January this year to run my business full time. I currently live in Inverness and run my own award winning private tuition business, My Primary Tutor. I have a growing team of currently 15 primary school teachers and we offer private tuition, 1 to 1 and in small groups, in literacy and numeracy to pupils across the country. I have joined the course as over the last 5 years doing private tutoring I am noticing more and more pupils with a real difficulty with maths. In particular understanding the concept of number and basic maths processes. I am hoping this will equip me to provide a specialist service to pupils who are really struggling and as a stepping stone toward me joining an online Level 7 course to become a Dyslexia and Dyscalculia assessor for the Highlands. I am really looking forward to learning more about Dyscalculia and the strategies to support learners with this difficulty.

Hi, I'm John from Ipswich, Suffolk and have been teaching secondary school maths for 7 years. Prior to that I spent 20+ years working in IT. I have been KS3 maths lead for the last few years and as part of my masters (educational leadership) I am leading an improvement programme in my school with a focus on dyscalculia. I've been using Steve's "More trouble with maths" extensively for the last year or so, also drawing on resources from Jane Emerson and Patricia Babtie. I teach a year 7 group and several seem to fit the criteria for dyscalculia. I have started looking at FoNS with a couple of my pupils and it really is an eye opener! I hope to use the skills I pick up on this course in my immediate work as well as shaping departmental and school policy to better support pupils with dyscalculia.

Hi everyone. My name is Anna Graham and I am a primary SENCo, as well as a specialist teacher and assessor for learners with dyslexia. For the last 6 years I have also been a tutor for the Level 5 and Level 7 programmes (dyslexia). I have had a keen interest in teaching mathematics to struggling learners for a number of years. In 2008 I trained to deliver the Catch Up Numeracy programme, and in 2014 I trained as a Numicon Intervention lead for my school. I have also used Steve's More Trouble with Maths assessment protocol and report format with a number of pupils at my school. Going forward I want to widen my knowledge and understanding in this field with a view to being able to assess for dyscalculia in the future, raise awareness amongst staff and provide specialist targeted mathematics support for pupils at my school. There seems to be a lot of assessment and support opportunities for learners with dyslexia, but no so much with maths, although the need is clearly there.

Hi, I’m a little late to the party as I have only just recovered from coronavirus (mild but exhausting) so I have a lot of catching up to do! I’m a L5 Dyslexia/SpLD Tutor & a specialist peripatetic Language & Communication TA, and hope to start L7 Assessing Dyslexia course in September. I’ve always enjoyed helping children with maths learning difficulties in school but not had much formal training - so am looking forward to learning lots.
