I'm Peter Whitehead, and I lead on mathematics in a general FE college in West London (Hammersmith, Fulham, Ealing, Southall, Acton) but based at home in Kent for the last few months. The vast majority of our students are 16+ and adults and, for one reason or another, have not got on with maths at school. Many have multiple barriers to learning and are understandably disengaged. Many are anxious about their maths attainment and many of those who do have underlying conditions are reluctant to have them assessed and seek support. Nonetheless, the vast majority can be supported to succeed. I am really looking forward to working with Judy and Steve to be able to better support those students who really struggle with their basic numeracy and remembering number facts.

Hello, I am Linda Beal. I recently left my management/ teaching role, at a general FE college in Ellesmere Port/ Chester/ Crewe, as I no longer felt that I was "making a difference". During the previous year, I covered a weekly numeracy class for the Independent Living Skills group - only 9 students, but all with their own barriers and wonderful personalities. We all loved the lessons, which were the catalyst to my decision to work as a private tutor. My plan for part of my new role is to offer free tuition and support materials to those SEND and disadvantaged learners, whose parents/ carers can't afford private tuition. I am thoroughly looking forward to working on this course.

Hello, I am a primary school teacher in Devon. I lead on English and have recently completed my PG Cert in SpLD dyslexia, which I found fascinating. I have a son with dyslexia but his understanding of number is very poor and so wonder whether this is due to the dyslexia or whether it could be dyscalculia. I am interested in finding out the difference. I want to be able to promote this learning difficulty more at my setting as it is a difficulty that is not understood as well as dyslexia.

Hello,
I am Lina Stathopoulou and I am a Teacher of the Deaf in a junior school in London. I have been in this role for 16 years and I have often come across children who exhibit problems with numeracy. I am really looking forward to this course and using what I learn to improve my practice.

Hi, I'm Jenny. I live and work in a place called Long Eaton, between Nottingham and Derby. I've worked as a primary school class teacher, given one to one maths tutoring up to G.C.S.E. (not recently), done lots of volunteering in schools from Foundation to KS3, worked as a specialist music teacher in the Netherlands and I'm currently working as a teaching assistant in upper juniors whilst taking a part time master's at the University of Derby with a focus on primary maths. I'm really interested in how to help the children who struggle to pick up basic maths concepts. By the time they reach upper juniors, they often have significant gaps and just try to survive each lesson.

Hi, I'm Sami. I'm a primary maths consultant and work is predominantly in Inner London supporting maths leaders and headteachers in developing maths teaching and learning in their schools. I'm freelance working part-time in 14 schools and before that worked for an LA for 13 years. Prior to this I was a primary teacher and deputy head and have always specialised in maths. I am often support schools in preparation for Ofsted inspections and help them try to improve their SATs results - this can involve them making difficult decisions and I worry that the needs of low attaining pupils are often marginalised. For years I have felt frustrated when conversations turn to pupils who are struggling with maths and I have wanted to develop my knowledge and understanding in order to better support these children. I have been a Numicon consultant for the last 6 years – though don’t deliver training very often. Both my daughters (and I) are dyslexic and I am aware how important it has been for their needs to be identified and for them to get appropriate support. I am really looking forward to developing my knowledge through this course!

Hello I am an Australian. I live in the capital of Australia - Canberra. It is winter here and it gets very cold but we have beautiful blue sky days. At present I work for the Eduction Directorate in the data around student performance field, therefore I can, and have been working from home since March. I have always been interested in neuro diversity. I am enrolled in this course as there isn't anything on offer in Australia.

Hello everyone,
I'm Jane, we relocated from The Midlands to Spalding, Lincolnshire a few years ago and I made the transition from Primary to Secondary. I have completed a PGCert SpLD (Dyslexia) and work with students in my setting who have literacy difficulties and additional needs. I'm really looking forward to working with everyone (although I'm a little apprehensive too) and I'm hoping that I'll gain the confidence to support students who struggle with numeracy difficulties as well as literacy as I feel this is often overlooked.

Hi everyone, I'm Claire. I am an independent primary maths consultant and trainer and I work in the North West of England. I have been teaching for 24 years and in 2011, I did an MA in Early Maths Intervention. I have been a Numbers Count teacher and trainer and have done a lot of work with children who have difficulties in mathematics. In September, I will be working part time at a local primary school working 1:1 and with small groups of children with mathematical difficulties and I am really looking forward to getting back to working with children and am hoping this course will further develop my knowledge which I can use to develop my practice.

Hi everyone, I'm Sue and I live in Berkshire. I am a trained Primary teacher but work in a secondary school doing some English, but mostly maths interventions. Three years ago I completed my OCR Level 5 Diploma in SpLD. As a result of this I also work for a Dyslexia charity on a Saturday, working 1:1 with children who are struggling in school because of their maths and literacy difficulties. I also do some private tuition. Since so much of my work is now supporting students in maths, I felt I needed more understanding of the maths difficulties that so many of my children struggle with. I am looking forward to this course and learning lots more about Dyscalculia and hope to develop practical strategies to really help my students.
